As a result of our partnership with NWEA, we've developed a MAP data import feature that allows schools to import student NWEA-MAP assessment data into the MATHia platform, and unlock the essential content students need to achieve on grade-level scores during the next MAP administration.
This article will walk you through the required steps for setting this feature up! Please see Appendix B to review the full list of Carnegie Learning-supported MAP assessments. Don't see the version of the MAP assessment that your school administers on our list? Contact Us to learn more about customization options or for additional information!
Carnegie Learning’s MAP feature works with a MAP results file exported from the NWEA’s interface. Anyone assigned with NWEA's Assessment Coordinator role can export those results from the View Reports area of the NWEA website.
To export results for all of the students in your school, choose these Export options in the NWEA interface:
The export produces a .csv file that you can import into the Carnegie Learning's Teacher’s Toolkit. You can open the the .csv file of MAP results in Microsoft Excel or another spreadsheet program.
The exported file includes a StudentID column (column B) and a SchoolName column (column C.) It is very important that you check the following before importing the results into Teacher's Toolkit:
The student identifiers in the StudentID column must match either the Username or the Student Number that are used in Teacher's Toolkit. This guarantees that the MATHia software will apply the correct results for each of your students.
There are several ways to ensure that these identifiers match:
The SchoolName column includes only one school name, and you are logged into that school in Teacher’s Toolkit. The school name in the MAP results file doesn’t have to match the school name as it appears in Teacher’s Toolkit, but both names must refer to the same school, and to only one school. All of the students in the file will be associated with the same school in the system: the school you logged into in Teacher’s Toolkit.
Follow the steps below to import the assessment results once you've verified that the NWEA StudentIDs are associated to your students in Teacher's Toolkit:
From the MyCL portal, select the school for which you’d like to add MAP assessment results.
On the Teacher’s Toolkit Welcome Page, select the grid in the upper righthand corner.
Scroll down on the menu and select the MAP icon.
The displayed window has an Overview tab, an Import tab, and an Apply MAP tab. Select the Import tab.
NOTE: The Overview tab will display MAP Student IDs, goals, and scores once results have been successfully imported.
Select Choose File to pick the .csv file that you would like to import.
Select the .csv file of MAP assessment data from your computer.
The system reads in the file and the Import tab will automatically update once the data has been populated.
Scroll down to view the results.
IMPORTANT! Make sure to view the NOTICES at the bottom of the window, which report on data that was not imported. Clicking the arrow will display the details for each of the displayed notices; in particular, the student identifier for the row that was skipped. For more information about the notices, please scroll down see APPENDIX A.
A confirmation message will display after the results are saved. Click the Print button at the bottom of the window to print a record of the import.
Quick Tip! The import notices don’t always indicate errors that need to be fixed. For example, your MAP results file may include results for a Reading assessment as well as a Math assessment. That’s fine! The import feature just skips those rows. If you do see something that you want to change, you can:
You are all set! You can now apply MAP assessment results to a class!
There are two ways that you can apply imported MAP results to a class:
Apply the results to an existing class:
Apply to a new class:
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Class Category must be assigned to the class in order for the results to successfully apply to the class. Some import files may contain data from many different grades, so selecting the Class Category will help to ensure that the students are not assigned above grade-level content.
You can view the modules that are assigned to each of your students on the Class Details screen.
NOTE: The MAP modules are added as "Additional" (formerly known as "Unsequenced") modules, and a student only sees the modules that are automatically unlocked for him or her.
Below are the descriptions of the 4 possible Error Notices from MAP Data Import:
N rows were not about ‘Mathematics’ test results.
This message refers to a row in the MAP results file that does not have the word “Mathematics” in column D (Field 4) or column E (Field 5). For example, you will get this message if your MAP results file includes results for a Reading assessment.
N rows report data that was normed against a different year’s norms. (This application supports 2015 norms.)
This message refers to a row in the MAP results file that does not say “2015” in column G (Field 7). The “Norms Reference Data” specifies the grade level that corresponds to a student’s RIT score. If different Norms Reference Data is used, then the assignment of content to students may be invalid.
N rows report data from a test without the 4 Math goals.
This message refers to a row in the MAP results file where column N (Field 14) does not contain “Survey with Goals”. The Carnegie Learning software supports MAP assessments that provide individual RiT scores for four areas of Math content. If a student took a “Survey”-type test without goals, then Teacher's Toolkit is not able to analyze the results.
N rows report data from a test that is not supported by this application.
NWEA offers many different versions of the MAP assessment. Below is the list of assessments that the Carnegie Learning MAP import feature supports at this time.

My school took a mid-year MAP assessment. Can I import their updated results?
Yes! Follow the same steps outlined in the IMPORTING MAP RESULTS INTO TEACHER'S TOOLKIT and the APPLYING MAP RESULTS sections of this guide. The new assessment results will override the previously imported results.
